Near South Side permit value drops 53% in July

Permits fell to $1.1 million in July, down from $2.4 million the month before. The neighborhood issued 23 permits total, a third fewer than June, with 13 of those coming through the express program. Graffiti complaints led 311 calls at 48, followed by twin counts of 27 for traffic signals out and potholes. Violent crime dropped 30 percent to 56 incidents, even as overall crime ticked up slightly to 229. Food inspection failures dropped from five to one. No new business licenses were recorded either month.
