Near South Side permit value hits $14.4 million
Permit value in Near South Side jumped 1,295% in July, reaching $14.4 million compared to just over $1 million the month before. The 22 permits included three for new construction and a dozen under the express program. Crime reports rose 20%, from 224 to 268, with violent incidents ticking up from 64 to 66. Graffiti removal led 311 requests with 78, followed by 68 pothole complaints. Three restaurants failed inspections, up from one in June.

Near South Side permit value drops 53% in July
Permits fell to $1.1 million in July, down from $2.4 million the month before. The neighborhood issued 23 permits total, a third fewer than June, with 13 of those coming through the express program. Graffiti complaints led 311 calls at 48, followed by twin counts of 27 for traffic signals out and potholes. Violent crime dropped 30 percent to 56 incidents, even as overall crime ticked up slightly to 229. Food inspection failures dropped from five to one. No new business licenses were recorded either month.
